This page is in its infancy. It will change as people use it and ask for or make changes.

The only change made on Monday 9/4 is to add a link to a quick and easy vi tutorial: How2vi.html

There is a not-quite complete tutorial for the bash shell: bash shell tutorial

There is a two-machine network up and running, soon to be a three-machine network that will be available for any SF-LUG member to practice RedHat Certification skills (to be a SF-LUG member, join the mailing list--no cost other than a little time in participating: email jim at well dot com.

SF-LUG RedHat Certification Study Group

This web page presents a study path and suggests resources for sf-lug members who want to explore the path to RedHat certification. It does not share the specifics of the RedHat study guides from RedHat's classes nor does it divulge the specifics of the RedHat certification exams.

Study Path

You must understand
  • the hardware that's in a commodity computer see the hardware page
  • the RedHat Linux operating system installed on a commodity computer see the OS page
  • the bash shell and the gnu toolkit commands see the gnu toolkit page updated 7/9
  • the /etc directory and (generally) its contents see the etc page updated 7/9
  • the essential network configuration that lets a host be a valid node on a network
  • the configuration necessary for a computer to be a client of a network service, of which there are many
  • the configuration necessary for a computer to host network services

ToCome:This section will have links to specifics for the above study path bullet points.

    Resources

You can't learn without being able to do.

  • To begin you'll need access to a commodity computer and some (any) Linux distribution.

  • At some point you'll need to have the RedHat Enterprise Linux distribution or one of its surregates: CentOS or WhiteBox or Pink Tie.

  • To practice for the RHCT exam, you'll need to work on a RedHat host that is in a network with various services.

  • To practice for the RHCE exam, you'll need to work on a RedHat host that provides network services.

    Online Study Lab

A lot of your development will require that you work on a command-line. This web page will soon have a link to a small network you can use to practice configuring a host for basic networking and for being a client for various network services. On-line lab should be available soon through a different IP address.

Tarball of tarballs for Genesys shell script class

    In the Javacat Restaurant

In the Javacat restaurant there is a sf-lug box on their LAN. If you're in there with a laptop that does wifi, point your browser to
    HTTP://192.168.1.201
and if the box is up you'll see a SF-LUG web page.

Ask for an account if you want to ssh in to the box; you can even have the root account. The purpose of the box is to have a common play area.

ToCome: The on-line lab will have at least three computers: a gateway, a server, and a client named "crash". Resource subheadings above will be expanded with links.
